Genesis 28

 Chapter 28

$^{1}$ So Isaac summoned Jacob, blessed him, and commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite girl. $^{2}$ Go at once to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother’s father. Marry one of the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother. $^{3}$ May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you so that you become an assembly of peoples. $^{4}$ May God give you and your offspring the blessing of Abraham so that you may possess the land where you live as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.” $^{5}$ So Isaac sent Jacob to Paddan-aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

$^{6}$ Esau noticed that Isaac blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-aram to get a wife there. When he blessed him, Isaac commanded Jacob, “Do not marry a Canaanite girl.” $^{7}$ And Jacob listened to his father and mother and went to Paddan-aram. $^{8}$ Esau realized that his father Isaac disapproved of the Canaanite women, $^{9}$ so Esau went to Ishmael and married, in addition to his other wives, Mahalath daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son. She was the sister of Nebaioth.

JACOB AT BETHEL

$^{10}$ Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. $^{11}$ He reached a certain place and spent the night there because the sun had set. He took one of the stones from the place, put it there at his head, and lay down in that place. $^{12}$ And he dreamed: A stairway was set on the ground with its top reaching the sky, and God’s angels were going up and down on it. $^{13}$ The Load was standing there beside him, saying, “I am the Load, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land on which you are lying. $^{14}$ Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out toward the west, the east, the north, and the south. All the peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. $^{15}$ Look, I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go. I will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

$^{16}$ When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he said, “Surely the Load is in this place, and I did not know it.” $^{17}$ He was afraid and said, “What an awesome place this is! This is none other than the house of God. This is the gate of heaven.” $^{18}$ Early in the morning Jacob took the stone that was near his head and set it up as a marker. He poured oil on top of it $^{19}$ and named the place Bethel, though previously the city was named Luz. $^{20}$ Then Jacob made a vow: “If God will be with me and watch over me during this journey I’m making, if he provides me with food to eat and clothing to wear, $^{21}$ and if I return safely to my father’s family, then the Load will be my God. $^{22}$ This stone that I have set up as a marker will be God’s house, and I will give to you a tenth of all that you give me.”

📜 Lecture: Genesis Chapter 28 – Jacob's Journey and the Dream at Bethel

Good morning, class. Today, we are focusing on Genesis Chapter 28, a pivotal chapter in the life of Jacob that marks a significant geographical and spiritual transition. This chapter divides naturally into two main sections: Isaac's instructions to Jacob and Jacob's encounter with the divine at Bethel.

Part I: Isaac's Instructions and Jacob's Departure (Verses 1-9)

Following the deception where Jacob acquired the blessing meant for Esau, Isaac now officially sends Jacob away. However, this departure is framed not as an exile, but as a mission to secure a proper wife, which was crucial for the continuation of the covenant.

1. The Command and the Covenant Blessing (Verses 1-4)

Isaac summons Jacob and gives him two specific, interconnected commands and accompanying blessings:

  • The Command: Jacob must not marry a Canaanite woman (a source of great distress to Rebekah and Isaac, as seen in Chapter 27). Instead, he must travel to Paddan-aram to the house of his mother’s brother, Laban, and marry one of his daughters.

  • The Blessing of the Load: Isaac invokes the Load Almighty to bless Jacob. Importantly, this blessing explicitly ties Jacob to the promises made to Abraham.

“May God give you and your offspring the blessing of Abraham so that you may possess the land where you live as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.”

This action confirms that Isaac, despite being deceived, recognizes and validates the transfer of the Abrahamic covenant to Jacob.

2. Esau's Reaction and Second Marriage (Verses 6-9)

Esau, recognizing his parents' clear disapproval of the local Canaanite wives he had previously taken, attempts to compensate by marrying a relative of Abraham.

  • Esau observes that Jacob was blessed and sent away with the specific command not to marry a Canaanite girl.

  • In an attempt to please Isaac, Esau goes to Ishmael (Abraham's other son) and marries Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael.

  • However, this marriage still does not place Esau within the lineage chosen by Isaac, nor does it secure the primary covenant blessing which has already been given to Jacob.

Part II: Jacob at Bethel – The Dream of the Ladder (Verses 10-22)

Jacob begins his long, lonely journey toward Haran. The journey forces a dramatic encounter with the divine that shapes his identity forever.

1. The Dream: The Ladder and the Angels (Verses 10-12)

Jacob stops for the night at a specific place—unnamed at the time—using a stone for a pillow. He falls asleep and dreams of a magnificent connection between heaven and earth:

  • He sees a stairway (often referred to as Jacob's Ladder) set on the ground, reaching the sky.

  • God's angels are ascending and descending on this pathway. This image depicts constant, active communication and movement between the divine realm and the human world.

2. The Renewal of the Covenant (Verses 13-15)

The Load then appears to Jacob and verbally confirms the covenant, echoing the promises made to Abraham and Isaac:

  • Identity: "I am the Load, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac." (Linking Jacob directly to the patriarchs).

  • Land: "I will give you and your offspring the land on which you are lying."

  • Offspring/Fulfillment: Jacob's descendants will be innumerable, spreading across the globe, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through him.

  • Presence and Protection: This is the most personal promise yet: "Look, I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go. I will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."

3. Jacob's Response: Fear, Worship, and the Vow (Verses 16-22)

Upon waking, Jacob is overwhelmed and recognizes the sanctity of the place.

  • Sanctification of the Place (Bethel): Jacob calls the spot the "House of God" and the "gate of heaven." He performs an act of worship: taking the stone he used as a pillow, setting it up as a marker (a pillar or memorial), and pouring oil on top of it.

  • He names the place Bethel, which literally means "House of God." (It had been called Luz previously).

  • Jacob's Vow: Jacob then makes a conditional vow to the Load, promising loyalty and tithes if the Load fulfills the promises of protection and provision during his journey and ensures his safe return.

"If God will be with me and watch over me... if he provides me with food to eat and clothing to wear, and if I return safely... then the Load will be my God."

"...I will give to you a tenth of all that you give me."

This vow is significant as it shows Jacob actively accepting the covenant terms and committing himself to the divine partnership, marking his true beginning as a patriarch.

This chapter transforms Jacob from a trickster fleeing his brother's wrath into a man confirmed by the Load as the inheritor of the covenant, on a journey guided by divine protection.

Do you have any questions about the significance of the Bethel dream, or would you like to discuss Jacob’s vow in more detail?
